Starting later

Is 13 too old for ABA therapy?

No. Budding Futures works with young people through age 18.

The goals change a great deal by 13, and so does how much say your teenager gets in them.

What actually changes at 13

Not whether therapy can help. What it is for. Early programs build communication foundations; teenage programs build independence, safety and self-advocacy.

What a teenage program is actually for

At three, a program is often about early communication. At thirteen, it is usually about running your own life a bit more safely and a bit more independently.

Early yearsTeenage years
First words, requesting, joint attentionSelf-advocacy, saying no, asking for help
Following routinesBuilding your own routines and managing time
Play skillsFriendship, conflict, reading a room
Toileting, dressing, feedingHygiene, money, transport, community safety
Parent-led goalsGoals the young person has a real say in

That last row is the one families notice most. A thirteen-year-old has opinions about their own therapy, and they should.

Where the age-five myth comes from

A widely repeated 1987 study reported strong outcomes for very young children. Other researchers challenged its methods in 1989, in print, but that part never reached parents.

What survived was a rumour of a cutoff. Reviews of early intervention study young children because that is who they enrol, not because older children were tested and did not respond.

Meanwhile a 2014 systematic review found significant evidence for social skills work with autistic adolescents.

Starting at 13 in Colorado

Coverage details sit on our teen ABA therapy page. Coverage in Colorado runs on medical necessity and your plan rather than on age alone. Health First Colorado covers eligible members under 21, and Budding Futures is enrolled under Provider Types 83 and 84.

There is also a timing detail worth knowing. Colorado requires transition planning to begin with the first IEP written when a student is 15, a full year earlier than federal law requires.

Starting at 13 means you are two years from that conversation rather than in the middle of it, which is a genuinely useful place to be.

Frequently asked questions from parents

Q: What is the oldest age for ABA therapy?
A: There is no clinical upper limit, though providers set their own ranges. Budding Futures serves young people from 18 months through 18 years and hands off at 18.

Q: Has my child missed the window?
A: There is no window that closes. Starting earlier is generally associated with better average outcomes for young children, which is not the same as a deadline.

Q: Will insurance still cover ABA for a 13-year-old?
A: Usually yes. Colorado insurance coverage is driven by medical necessity and your plan, not by a birthday. Health First Colorado covers services for eligible members under 21.

Q: Will my teenager even agree to it?
A: That is the right question to ask, and the answer shapes everything. Our work is assent-based, so a teenager who refuses is telling us something we need to act on.

Q: What if my teen was only diagnosed recently?
A: That is common and it is not a problem. A recent diagnosis usually means the goals start from where your teenager is now rather than from a checklist.
