Choosing between a specialist and a generalist
Local practices split roughly into two kinds, and the difference affects both cost and wait.
Some do developmental evaluation as their main work. Because that's the whole job, scheduling tends to move faster and the fee usually comes quoted as one package, with the report written against autism criteria from the start.
Others are general psychology practices, where autism assessment sits alongside therapy, ADHD testing and school evaluations. Those often bill by the hour instead, so your total moves with how many hours your child actually needs. Published testing fees at Colorado practices run from about $500 to $2,500, with hourly rates near $170.
Which one you want depends on the question you're bringing through the door. Autism on its own, and the specialist is usually quicker. Autism plus worries about attention, learning or anxiety, and the broader practice can settle all of it in one sitting rather than sending you somewhere else afterwards.
Free evaluation through Jeffco
Most of the town is served by Jeffco Public Schools, which runs Child Find for children aged 3 and up. The state education department puts it plainly: "Child Find is provided at no cost to families," and a parent can refer without a doctor's involvement.
Children under 3 go to Early Intervention Colorado instead, and parents can refer directly.
What comes out of Child Find is an educational eligibility decision. It can lead to an IEP and school-based support. It isn't a medical diagnosis, and most commercial insurers want a clinical one before they authorize therapy. Because the district route costs nothing, running it in parallel with a clinical appointment is the sensible default rather than a fallback.

What the evaluation involves
Start with the difference between the two words families hear most. Screening is a short developmental checklist. A psychological assessment for autism is the full diagnostic evaluation that can diagnose autism spectrum disorder, and a clinician has to conduct it.
Expect two to four hours of structured assessment, sometimes across more than one appointment.
Work backwards from the report, because that's the thing you actually need. To write it, the clinician has to gather a developmental history from you, covering milestones, language, play and what the family has already noticed.
Then comes the part with your child in the room. Most practices use the ADOS-2, a structured play and conversation session, and some add the ADI-R, a longer parent interview. Alongside that sits an adaptive functioning measure, which is a rating of ordinary skills: dressing, safety, asking for help.
Cognitive or language testing gets added when the clinician needs to tell autism apart from a language delay. Last is a feedback session where someone explains what they found, and then the written report.
When you book, ask whether the quoted fee covers the report. At hourly practices the report writing is sometimes billed separately, and it's the part you actually need for insurance.
The Arvada county split, and what it means for Medicaid
Most of the town sits in Jefferson County, with a portion extending into Adams County. Those two counties are in different Medicaid regions.

Colorado replaced its seven-region map with four regions on July 1, 2025, so guidance naming older region numbers no longer applies to either side of the line.
On Health First Colorado, the state doesn't require an autism diagnosis for behavioral therapy:
"Does my child have to have a diagnosis of Autism to qualify for the services? No. Behavioral therapy is available to all children currently eligible for Health First Colorado when the service is medically necessary."
