Children's Hospital Colorado sits on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, in the 80045 zip code, and it runs diagnostic evaluation for autism spectrum disorders. Hospital-based teams typically bring several disciplines into one assessment, which is useful when a child has medical questions alongside the developmental ones.
The trade-off is the wait. Hospital diagnostic programs across the country carry the longest lists, and a referral from your pediatrician is usually required rather than optional.
So treat Anschutz as one line in the water, not the only one. Private practices in Aurora and the surrounding metro often move faster, and the free district route can start immediately.

Aurora families should widen the search radius on purpose. The city sits at the eastern edge of the metro, and several of the practices that assess young children are clustered west toward Denver and south toward Centennial. A twenty minute drive can be worth several months.
Two districts, one city
Aurora is served by two school districts, and your address decides which one you deal with. Most of the city is Aurora Public Schools. A substantial portion, generally toward the south and east, falls inside Cherry Creek School District.
This matters because free evaluation from age 3 runs through your district's Child Find team, and calling the wrong district costs you weeks. Check which district your address belongs to before you make the referral.
The state education department puts it plainly: "Child Find is provided at no cost to families." For children under 3, the route is Early Intervention Colorado, and you can refer your own child.
What a district gives you is educational eligibility, which can lead to an IEP and school support. It isn't a medical diagnosis, and most commercial insurers want the medical one before they authorize therapy.

What the evaluation involves
Whether it happens at a hospital or a private practice, the components are broadly the same. Expect two to four hours, sometimes split across visits.
Your child spends most of the appointment in a structured play and conversation session called the ADOS-2. You spend most of yours answering questions about milestones, language, play and family history, sometimes through a formal interview such as the ADI-R.
Both settings add an adaptive functioning measure, which rates everyday skills, and cognitive or language testing where autism and a language delay need separating. Everything ends the same way: a feedback session, then a written report.
Where a hospital team differs is breadth. Occupational therapy, speech-language assessment and medical screening can be folded into the same block, which makes for a longer day and fewer separate appointments to chase afterwards.

Paying for it in Aurora
