How far you actually have to go
Highlands Ranch is a large residential community without much clinical assessment capacity of its own. In practice, families here look north and west.
Littleton and Englewood are the nearest clusters of practices that diagnose autism, typically a fifteen to twenty five minute drive depending on where in Highlands Ranch you start and what C-470 is doing. Central Denver adds roughly another fifteen minutes.
Plan for more than one trip. A full evaluation is often split across an intake, a testing session and a feedback appointment, so a practice that's twenty minutes away is really an hour of driving three separate times.
Ask whether any part can be done by telehealth. Intake interviews and feedback sessions frequently can be, even when the testing itself has to be in person.

Free evaluation through Douglas County
Highlands Ranch is served by the Douglas County School District, which runs Child Find for children aged 3 and up at no cost. The state education department puts it plainly: "Child Find is provided at no cost to families," and a parent can make the referral without a doctor.
For children under 3, the route is Early Intervention Colorado.
Understand what you're getting. Child Find determines educational eligibility for special education services, which can mean an IEP and support at school. It doesn't produce a medical diagnosis, and most commercial insurers want that medical diagnosis before authorizing therapy. Since the district route is free and has no travel attached, it's a sensible thing to start while you're still arranging a clinical appointment.

What the evaluation involves
Worth separating two things before you book. A developmental screening at the pediatrician is a short checklist that flags whether to look further. A diagnostic evaluation is what can diagnose autism spectrum disorder, and it examines social communication, social interaction and repetitive behavior in detail.
Two to four hours of structured assessment, commonly spread over more than one visit.
Because it usually spans more than one trip, it helps to know what each one is for.
The first visit is mostly you talking. Expect a developmental history covering milestones, language, play and family history, and at some practices a longer structured interview such as the ADI-R.
The middle visit is your child's. That is the ADOS-2, a structured play and conversation session, plus an adaptive functioning measure rating everyday skills, and cognitive or language testing if the clinician needs to rule out a language delay.
The last visit is the feedback session, where someone walks you through the findings. The written report follows after that, and it is the document that unlocks services.
Ask what the report includes and how long it takes. For a family already driving to appointments, a practice that turns the report around in two weeks rather than eight is worth more than one that's five minutes closer.
Paying for it in Douglas County
Douglas County is in Region 4 of Colorado's Medicaid system, run by Colorado Access, on (800) 511-5010. Region 4 also covers Denver, Adams and Arapahoe counties, so Highlands Ranch shares its organization with most of the metro.
Colorado moved from seven Medicaid regions to four on July 1, 2025. Guidance that names an older region number for Douglas County predates that change.
If you're on Health First Colorado, this rule is worth knowing before you spend months waiting:
"Does my child have to have a diagnosis of Autism to qualify for the services? No. Behavioral therapy is available to all children currently eligible for Health First Colorado when the service is medically necessary."
