The Jefferson County difference
Lakewood is in Jefferson County, which places it in Region 3 of Colorado's Medicaid system. Region 3 is run by Colorado Community Health Alliance, on (855) 627-4685.
Denver, ten minutes east, is in Region 4 under a different organization. So advice from a Denver parent about which number to call, which care coordinator to ask for, or which provider list to check will point you somewhere that doesn't manage your child's benefit.
Region 3 also covers Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Park, Teller and El Paso counties. Colorado consolidated from seven regions to four on July 1, 2025, so anything you read that names a higher region number for Jeffco predates the change.

Realistically, most Lakewood families will also be calling into Denver, Arvada and Golden. That's normal here and worth doing early, because the practices closest to the Sixth Avenue and Wadsworth corridors fill first.
Free evaluation through Jeffco
From age 3, Jeffco Public Schools evaluates through its Child Find team at no cost. The Colorado Department of Education states plainly that "Child Find is provided at no cost to families," and a referral can come from anyone who is concerned about a child, including you.
Below age 3, the route is Early Intervention Colorado, and parents refer directly without a doctor.
Keep the two outcomes separate in your head. Child Find determines whether your child qualifies for special education services, which is an educational decision. A medical diagnosis is a clinical one, and it's the version most insurers ask for before authorizing therapy. Starting the free route while you wait on a clinical appointment costs you nothing and often gets support in place months earlier.

What the evaluation involves
Screening and diagnosis get used interchangeably and they're different steps. A screening is the short developmental checklist at a well-child visit. A diagnostic evaluation is the longer assessment that can diagnose autism spectrum disorder, or ASD.
Expect a structured process rather than a single test, usually two to four hours in total.
The bulk of it is two things: a long conversation with you, and structured time with your child. The conversation covers milestones, language, play and family history. The structured time is usually the ADOS-2, a play and conversation session designed to draw out the behaviours clinicians are looking for.
Around those sit the extras. Some practices add the ADI-R, a more detailed parent interview. Nearly all include an adaptive functioning measure, which rates ordinary skills like dressing and safety. Cognitive or language testing gets added when autism and a language delay need telling apart. It ends with a feedback session and a written report.
Ask what the report will actually say about services. A report that names recommended supports is more useful to an insurer than one that stops at the diagnosis.
What it costs
On Health First Colorado, families generally pay nothing for a diagnostic evaluation with an enrolled provider. On a commercial plan you pay your deductible and coinsurance. Self-pay in Colorado runs roughly $500 to $2,970 at practices that publish their prices.
There's one Health First Colorado rule that changes what you can do while waiting:
"Does my child have to have a diagnosis of Autism to qualify for the services? No. Behavioral therapy is available to all children currently eligible for Health First Colorado when the service is medically necessary."
