Littleton spans Arapahoe, Jefferson and Douglas counties. For Colorado Medicaid, those counties don't all sit in the same region.

Age ranges vary sharply here, more than in most parts of the metro. At least one Littleton practice starts at age 5, which rules it out for the preschool-age questions that bring most families to this page. Ask about your child's specific age before anything else.
The free route by district
Littleton addresses fall into Littleton Public Schools, Jeffco Public Schools or Douglas County School District depending on where you are. Each runs its own Child Find team, and the state education department puts it plainly: "Child Find is provided at no cost to families."
From age 3 you refer to your district. Under age 3, the route is Early Intervention Colorado, which parents can contact directly.
The result is an educational eligibility decision, not a medical diagnosis. It can produce an IEP and school-based services. Most private insurers still want a clinical diagnosis before they authorize therapy, so treat the district route as the free, fast track that runs alongside the clinical one rather than instead of it.

What the evaluation involves
Screening and evaluation are different steps. Screening is the short developmental checklist at a well-child visit. A psychological evaluation for autism is the longer assessment that can diagnose autism spectrum disorder, abbreviated to ASD in the report you receive.
Plan on two to four hours, occasionally split across visits.
Most of the appointment happens in two modes. In one, a clinician sits with your child through the ADOS-2, a structured play and conversation session built to surface the things that matter for a diagnosis. In the other, you answer questions about milestones, language, play and family history, which at some practices becomes a formal interview called the ADI-R.
Two more pieces get built around those. An adaptive functioning measure rates ordinary skills, dressing, safety, asking for help, and it often drives how many support hours end up recommended. Cognitive or language testing is added when a clinician needs to be sure a language delay isn't doing the work instead.
Then it ends the way these always end. Someone sits down and explains what they found, and a written report follows.
If your child is already receiving school services, bring the paperwork. Existing school evaluations, IEP documents and teacher observations often shorten the clinical history-taking and can strengthen the final report.
What it costs
Health First Colorado generally covers a diagnostic evaluation with an enrolled provider at no cost to the family. Commercial plans charge deductible and coinsurance. Self-pay at Colorado practices that publish prices runs roughly $500 to $2,970.
One rule is worth raising with your provider if you're on Medicaid and stuck waiting:
"Does my child have to have a diagnosis of Autism to qualify for the services? No. Behavioral therapy is available to all children currently eligible for Health First Colorado when the service is medically necessary."
