A tantrum and a meltdown need opposite responses. We help Colorado families tell them apart and shrink both, at home, BCBA-led. Medicaid usually $0.
Budding Futures ABA helps Colorado families handle tantrums and meltdowns with in-home, BCBA-led therapy. The first thing we bring is a distinction most advice skips: a tantrum and a meltdown look alike from the doorway, and they need opposite responses. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA builds each plan around which one your child is actually having, and when. Medicaid families usually pay nothing.
Tantrum or meltdown, and why it changes everything
A tantrum has a goal. Your child wants the tablet, the candy, the later bedtime, and the screaming is a strategy that has worked before. A tantrum usually pauses when the audience leaves and ends fast once the answer is clearly final.
A meltdown has no goal. It is a nervous system past its limit, from noise, change, hunger, demands stacked too high, or a day that asked too much. There is no strategy in it, and your child cannot simply stop, because nobody negotiates their way out of a fire alarm.
The response has to match. Holding a calm limit works for tantrums and makes meltdowns worse. Reducing input and riding it out works for meltdowns and teaches tantrums to grow louder. Families usually get handed one script for both, which is why one of them keeps not working. Sorting your child's episodes into the right column, hour by hour and trigger by trigger, is the first thing your BCBA does.
What the plan does about each
For tantrums, the plan works on the strategy. Your child learns faster, easier ways to ask, wait, and accept no, built with functional communication training and honest reinforcement. The adults learn to make the payoff for asking calmly beat the payoff for screaming. Data gets collected on every episode, so you can watch the curve bend within weeks instead of guessing.
For meltdowns, the plan works on the load. We map what reliably tips your child over, using the same functional assessment we use for any serious behavior, then build the day so fewer moments stack past the limit. Warning signs get caught earlier, demands get sequenced better, and recovery gets a plan of its own: where your child goes, what helps, what to skip saying. Prevention does most of the work, because once a real meltdown starts, teaching is over for the day.
Why this works better at home
Tantrums and meltdowns are not clinic behaviors. They happen in your kitchen at 6pm, in the Target checkout line, at the moment the tablet turns off. Our therapists work inside those real moments across every Colorado city, 8AM to 8PM, and coach you through the plan while the actual routine happens. Your child's RBT records every episode, and Rachel reviews the plan at roughly 20 percent supervision, about four times the BACB minimum, so the plan changes when the data says so.
Parent coaching carries the plan through the hours we are not there. You will know the difference between the two kinds of episodes, what to do in each, and what to stop doing, which for most families is the biggest relief on this page.

Questions parents ask about tantrums and meltdowns
How do I tell a tantrum from a meltdown in the moment?
Ask what stops it. If it pauses when negotiating starts or the audience leaves, it is probably a tantrum. If your child cannot respond to offers at all and the episode has to burn out, it is probably a meltdown. Your BCBA maps your child's specific pattern, because plenty of kids do both in the same week.
Should I ignore tantrums?
Not exactly. Ignoring the screaming while staying warm to the child is closer, and it only works when your child has a better way to ask that actually gets answered. Teaching that better way is the therapy part. Ignoring a meltdown, on the other hand, is not a strategy at all, and we will never ask you to.
My child's meltdowns are getting more intense. Is that normal?
Meltdowns often grow when the load grows, and school years pile on load. It is worth acting rather than waiting it out. If episodes include self-injury or aggression, tell us during the consultation, because those get their own plan components.
Does insurance cover this?
Yes, reducing dangerous and disruptive behavior is core ABA therapy, and Colorado requires state-regulated plans to cover it. Health First Colorado usually covers therapy at $0. We verify your exact benefits before anything starts.
