Is ABA therapy harmful?
Good ABA therapy today is not harmful. The old version could be. The difference is how it is done and who is watching. Budding Futures ABA uses gentle, assent-based therapy in your home, supervised by a BCBA, so you can see for yourself.
Modern ABA leans on play and praise, not punishment. A child can say no and take a break.
The fear is real, and it has a history
Many parents read scary stories online. That fear is not made up. Decades ago, some ABA used punishment and even harsh methods that the field now calls wrong.
Some autistic adults also say older therapy pushed them to hide who they are. Things like forcing eye contact or stopping every stim. We take those stories seriously. They are a big reason good ABA looks different now.
What good ABA looks like today
The rules have changed. The BACB Ethics Code tells therapists to do no harm and to use the gentlest approach that works. At Budding Futures, your child leads. We use play, praise, and small wins, not pressure.
We do not try to stop harmless stimming. If a behavior is safe and helps your child feel calm, we leave it alone. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA, reviews each plan so it stays kind and useful.
| Old, outdated ABA | ABA done well today |
|---|---|
| Long, rigid hours for every child | Hours matched to your child and goals |
| Punishment for wrong answers | Praise, play, and reinforcement |
| Stop all stimming | Leave harmless stims alone |
| Force eye contact and quiet hands | Respect how your child communicates |
| The therapist decides everything | Your child can say no, and you are in the room |
How we keep it safe in your home
Most of our therapy happens in your home, with you close by. You can watch any session. You can ask us to slow down or stop. That kind of openness is hard to fake.
If you are comparing providers, ask three questions. Do you use assent, so my child can take breaks? Do you target stimming? Can I watch sessions? Honest teams will not dodge these. You can also read our methodology, our notes on BCBA supervision, and whether ABA actually works.
Still unsure if ABA is right for your child?
Budding Futures can walk you through exactly how we work, answer your safety questions, and let you decide with no pressure.
