Bedtime battles and 3am wakings are often learned patterns, and learned patterns can be retaught. In-home across Colorado.
A two-hour bedtime. A child in your bed at 3am, every night, for years. A 5am start no alarm chose. Sleep problems are among the most exhausting parts of raising an autistic child because nobody in the house recovers. Budding Futures ABA builds behavioral sleep plans with Colorado families, in the home where the bedtime actually happens. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA reviews every plan.
What ABA can and cannot fix about sleep
Medical sleep problems, apnea, restless legs, reflux, seizure activity, need your pediatrician first, and we ask about that workup before writing sleep goals. What the behavioral side owns is large: bedtimes that spiral because they are unpredictable, a child who has only ever fallen asleep with a parent lying beside them, night wakings that earn an hour of company, screens that push the whole night later, and routines that collapse the moment one step changes. Those are learned patterns, and learned patterns can be retaught.
How a behavioral sleep plan works
It starts with two weeks of data, a simple sleep log we set up with you, because bedtime problems lie to tired parents. The log shows what actually predicts the bad nights: the nap that ran long, the tablet at 8pm, the bedtime drifting across the week.
Then the plan rebuilds the runway. A fixed, visual bedtime routine your child can predict step by step. Falling asleep in their own bed with gradually less of you, faded in steps your child can handle rather than a door shut on a crying kid. Night wakings that get calm, boring responses instead of company and conversation. Mornings anchored so the whole rhythm stabilizes. Every step is tracked, and the plan moves at the pace the data supports.
Sessions run in your home, anywhere in Colorado, and because bedtime happens after office hours, our 8AM to 8PM schedule and weekend availability let a therapist actually see the routine that matters instead of hearing about it secondhand. Parent coaching carries the overnight hours, with a plan for exactly what to do at 3am, agreed in daylight when everyone can think.

Questions parents ask about sleep help
Is this just sleep training? We tried that and it was awful.
Classic cry-it-out assumes a child who can self-soothe and understand the change. Many autistic kids cannot yet, which is why it failed and everyone suffered. Our plans fade support gradually, teach the missing skills, and never rely on leaving a panicking child alone.
My child has been in our bed for six years. Is that fixable?
Usually yes, in steps, and without a single dramatic night. Six years of habit takes weeks of patient fading, not one hard line. Families are often surprised that the plan feels calm.
Does insurance cover sleep goals?
Sleep and bedtime goals are a normal part of a medically necessary ABA plan. Health First Colorado usually covers therapy at $0, and we verify your exact benefits before anything starts.
