BCBA school consultation connects your child's ABA plan with what's happening at school. With your consent and the school's permission, a BCBA can talk with the teacher, watch a routine, and help both teams use the same strategies. The point is simple: you shouldn't have to be the only one carrying the message between home and school.
What does BCBA school consultation include?
Consultation is coordination work, led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) acting as a behavior analysis consultant for your child. The BCBA can suggest a behavior support or behavior intervention approach that school staff can actually run, and offer light professional development to the classroom team. Here is what it can look like once the permissions are in place:
- Talking with the teacher, and observing the classroom when the school allows it
- Reading the school's reports and any functional behavior assessment (FBA), and comparing how your child acts at home versus in class
- Lining up the ABA plan so its goals match the school's, with language both teams can use
- Helping you prep before a school or IEP meeting
- Following up with your ABA team afterward
When do parents request school consultation?
Most families reach out when the same child looks different in two places, or when they are stuck playing messenger. Common triggers:
- The school sees behavior that does not happen at home
- Skills learned in ABA are not transferring to the classroom
- Teachers and therapists are using different strategies
- You're relaying every message between the two teams

What school consultation does not include
Being honest about the limits matters. Budding Futures does not:
- Control IEP decisions or replace the school team
- Provide legal representation
- Guarantee school access or classroom services
- Determine educational placement
- Require the school to adopt ABA recommendations
How the consultation process works
- You contact Budding Futures and share the school concern.
- We collect consent and the school's contact information.
- The BCBA reviews the concern and any available data.
- The school decides whether communication or observation is permitted.
- The BCBA provides clinically appropriate input, then reviews recommendations with you and the treatment team.
School consultation versus direct school-based ABA
Consultation advises and coordinates. Direct school-based ABA means a provider is delivering therapy during the school day, which usually requires more school involvement and clearer documentation. Not every child needs direct support at school, and not every school allows outside providers. Many families get what they need from consultation plus in-home or after-school ABA.
