Does insurance cover ABA therapy for ADHD?
Usually not on an ADHD diagnosis alone. Colorado has three separate coverage routes and only one of them is written broadly enough to reach beyond autism.

Colorado’s private-insurance mandate and TRICARE both require an autism diagnosis. Health First Colorado is written more broadly and is the route worth asking about.
The three coverage routes in Colorado
Most pages on this topic answer with a vague "it depends on your plan". Colorado is more specific than that, and the three routes genuinely differ.

So if your child has autism, coverage is well established. If your child has ADHD and nothing else, private plans and TRICARE will very likely decline, and Medicaid is the one worth a real conversation.
Why does autism unlock ABA when ADHD does not?
Because the coverage rules were written around the evidence base, and that evidence base grew up around autism.
State mandates were passed specifically to stop plans excluding autism treatment. Nothing equivalent was passed for ADHD, partly because the standard ADHD treatments, medication and parent training, were already covered under ordinary medical and behavioral health benefits.
Q: Does that mean ADHD gets worse care?
A: Not necessarily. It means the covered path is different. Parent training in behavior management is the guideline-recommended first line for young children, and it is a normal behavioral health benefit rather than an ABA authorisation.
What to do before you call anyone
Three things will save you weeks.
First, find out which of the three routes you are actually on, because the answer changes everything else. Second, gather the diagnostic paperwork you already have, since every route needs a signed evaluation. Third, ask about medical necessity rather than diagnosis alone, because that is the language the reviewer will use.
Q: What if we are told no?
A: Ask which criterion failed and get it in writing. A denial for a missing document is a different problem from a denial on diagnosis, and only one of them is worth appealing.

Without that mandate, an ADHD-only request depends entirely on an individual plan’s medical policy, and most do not cover it.
Q: Does Health First Colorado require an autism diagnosis?
A: No, not as the only route. The state’s criteria for its Pediatric Behavioral Therapy benefit ask for a condition where behavioral therapy is recognised as therapeutically appropriate, and they give autism spectrum disorder as an example rather than the sole qualifier.
Q: What are the other Medicaid routes?
A: The criteria also describe pathways where a child cannot adequately take part in home, school or community activities because of behavior or skill deficits, or where a child presents a safety risk. Everything still has to meet EPSDT medical necessity for members aged 20 and under.
Q: Does TRICARE cover ABA for ADHD?
A: No. The Autism Care Demonstration requires a definitive autism diagnosis from an approved provider before a child can access ABA through it.
Q: Is there anything Medicaid will not cover even if we qualify?
A: Yes. Colorado explicitly excludes social skills training from the behavioral therapy benefit, so a plan cannot be built around that alone.
