Brothers and sisters live inside autism too. In-home ABA gives them a role, and gives you a plan for the whole house.
Siblings live inside autism too. They share the toys that get grabbed, the outings that end early, the parent attention that keeps getting pulled away. Because Budding Futures ABA works in your home, brothers and sisters are not in the waiting room; they are part of the plan. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA builds each family's approach, statewide across Colorado.
What sibling involvement actually means
To be precise about it: your autistic child is our client, and we are not therapists for siblings. What in-home ABA offers siblings is something clinics cannot: a role. Siblings become the best practice partners a plan can have, the built-in peer for turn-taking, sharing, joining games, and losing gracefully. A brother who learns how to invite play in a way his sister can accept gets a better afternoon out of the deal, every day, forever.
How siblings fit into sessions
With your permission and their interest, siblings join parts of home sessions where a peer helps the goal: a board game for turn-taking, sidewalk play for joining, a snack routine for waiting and sharing. The RBT structures the moment so both kids succeed, and no sibling is ever drafted into unpaid therapist duty. Short, fun, voluntary. The data stays about your autistic child; the benefit lands on both.
Sibling conflict gets direct attention too. Grabbing, hitting between siblings, a brother's fear after a meltdown, those show up in the functional assessment like any other pattern, and the plan addresses both sides of the interaction: a safer behavior for one child, a clear playbook for the other.
Coaching for the whole household
Parent coaching at Budding Futures is family coaching in practice. We help you explain autism and the therapy to siblings in words that fit their age, set up house rules that feel fair to a neurotypical kid living with accommodations, and protect one-on-one time so nobody grows up feeling like the afterthought. When a sibling needs real counseling of their own, and some do, we say so and point you toward the right professional instead of pretending ABA covers it.

Practical details
Sibling involvement adds no cost and requires no extra authorization; it is how we run in-home sessions when it serves the goals. Statewide across Colorado, 8AM to 8PM with weekend availability, ages 18 months through 18 years. Health First Colorado usually covers therapy at $0 under Provider Types 83 and 84, commercial plans typically $0 to $500, benefits verified up front, no waitlist right now.
Sibling involvement runs through our parent coaching and every in-home plan.
Questions parents ask about siblings
My other child resents the attention imbalance. Does involving them help?
Often, yes. Resentment feeds on exclusion and mystery. A sibling with a real, fun role in sessions, and a parent coached to protect their one-on-one time, usually softens. We also keep sibling participation voluntary, because drafted helpers resent harder.
Can sessions work on how my kids fight with each other?
Yes. Sibling conflict is one of the most common home goals we get asked about, and home is the only setting where it can be observed and worked directly.
Is there support for what my other child is feeling?
We coach you on those conversations, and we are honest about the limit: a sibling carrying real anxiety or grief deserves their own counselor, and we will help you find one rather than stretch ABA past what it is.
