Is this normal?

Why is my child tired or cranky after ABA therapy?

It is usually normal for a child to be tired or cranky after ABA therapy, especially in the first few weeks. New routines take real energy. It should get easier over time, not worse. Budding Futures ABA works in your home and can adjust the schedule so it fits your child.

First weeks are the hardest

Like the first weeks of school, new people and new routines wear a child out. It usually settles.

Why it happens

Therapy asks your child to focus, try new things, and meet new people. That is hard work for a young brain. Many kids come home tired, hungry, or quiet at first.

Think about a child's first weeks of school. They are worn out by pickup time. ABA can feel the same way early on, then ease as your child gets used to it.

Normal tired vs. a reason to speak up

Some tiredness is expected. Other signs mean you should talk to your BCBA right away. Trust what you see at home.

What helps, and how we adjust

A snack, some quiet time, and a calm landing after sessions go a long way. So does the right number of hours for your child's age. Too many hours can wear a child down.

Because Budding Futures works in your home, your child skips the extra stress of a new building and a long drive. Rachel Blackburn, BCBA, can shorten sessions or ease the ramp-up if your child needs it. See more on ABA hours, how long ABA takes, and in-home ABA therapy.

Worried your child is too worn out?

Budding Futures can review your child's schedule and adjust the hours so therapy helps without overwhelming them.
