Calm, assent-based help with tooth brushing, bathing, and dressing, built around your child's sensory reality. In-home across Colorado.
For a lot of autistic kids, hygiene is not a motivation problem. The toothbrush genuinely feels bad. Water in the ears is genuinely alarming. Budding Futures ABA teaches self-care skills at home, across Colorado, in a way that takes the sensory side seriously instead of pushing through it. Plans are built by Rachel Blackburn, BCBA, Medicaid families usually pay nothing, and there is no waitlist right now.
Self-care skills we work on
- Tooth brushing, from tolerating the brush to doing the whole job
- Hand washing and face washing
- Bathing, showering, and hair washing
- Hair brushing and nail trimming, two of the hardest sensory asks
- Dressing, undressing, and picking weather-right clothes
- Toileting, wiping, and flushing
- Puberty hygiene for older kids: deodorant, showering on a schedule, managing it privately
Toilet training is its own program with its own page. If that is the mountain in front of you, start at our potty training page.
The sensory side comes first
Forcing a child through a hygiene routine teaches them to fear it. So we start smaller than most parents expect. Holding the dry toothbrush counts. Brush touching lips for two seconds counts. Each step earns real reinforcement, your child can say no and we honor it, and the next step only comes when the current one is comfortable. Behavior analysts call this gradual exposure with positive reinforcement. Parents call it the first calm toothbrushing in years.
Assent-based care matters double here, because hygiene involves a child's body. Our approach never holds a child through a routine. If nail trimming is a five-alarm event, the plan starts where your child actually is, maybe with the clippers just visible across the room, and moves at the pace the data supports.
What teaching looks like at your sink
Self-care skills are taught with the same tools as any ABA therapy goal: a task analysis that breaks the routine into small steps, modeling so your child sees it first, visual schedules on the mirror, and reinforcement that makes finishing worth it. The practice happens at your sink and in your bathtub, with your water pressure and your towels, so nothing has to transfer from a clinic. Your child's RBT, the technician who runs daily sessions, records data every visit, and Rachel reviews the plan at roughly 20 percent supervision, about four times the BACB minimum.
A VB-MAPP or ABLLS-R assessment sets the starting line, and each goal is written so you can see it move. For an 11-year-old, that might be showering with a checklist and one reminder, four school nights out of five. For a four-year-old, it might be hands washed after the toilet without a prompt, ten days running.
Older kids, puberty, and privacy
Hygiene needs change hard at 10, 11, 12. Deodorant becomes non-optional, showers move from twice a week to daily, and the teaching has to respect a kid who wants privacy. We serve ages 18 months through 18 years across Colorado, and our plans for tweens and teens are written with dignity in mind: private routines taught with checklists instead of an adult in the doorway, and parent coaching so you can support it without hovering.

Why Colorado families choose Budding Futures ABA

Questions parents ask about self-care and hygiene
My child screams at tooth brushing. Where would you even start?
Below the scream. We find the biggest step your child can do calmly, even if that is the brush sitting on the counter during breakfast, reinforce it, and build from there. Slower at the start, much faster overall, because we are not undoing fear as we go.
Is hygiene help really covered by insurance?
Yes, when it is part of a medically necessary ABA therapy plan. Self-care is a core skill domain in the assessments Colorado plans rely on. Health First Colorado usually covers ABA at $0, and we verify your exact benefits before anything starts.
Do you handle puberty hygiene for older kids?
We do, through 18, with privacy-first teaching and parent coaching. Deodorant, daily showers, and managing routines privately are all teachable skills, and the earlier they start, the calmer middle school goes.
