Does ABA therapy actually improve speech?
It can help a child communicate more. Whether it improves speech itself is a genuinely contested question.
Most provider pages skip that second half. We would rather show you the disagreement than pretend it is settled.
Budding Futures provides ABA. We do not provide speech therapy, we do not employ speech-language pathologists, and we do not write speech goals. We work alongside your child’s SLP.
What the strongest study actually tested
The most rigorous trial in this area randomised 61 minimally verbal autistic children aged 5 to 8. After 24 weeks, children whose program included a speech-generating device produced 61.9 spontaneous communicative utterances against 40.3 for those without one.
That is a real result with a moderate effect size, and the gains had partly faded three months later.
One honest caveat matters here. That study tested a naturalistic, play-based approach paired with a communication device, not classic discrete-trial ABA. It supports the kind of teaching Budding Futures does, and it is not a blank cheque for everything labelled ABA.
The argument against, from a credible source
Laurent Mottron, an autism researcher publishing in a peer-reviewed journal, has argued the quality of intervention evidence is low or very low.
He goes further, writing that intervention at this age has no significant demonstrated influence on later speech development, and that speech signs between ages two and four are not predictive of eventual language ability.
We disagree with parts of that and we are not going to hide it from you. A parent choosing between therapies should know a serious researcher takes this position.
What nobody can tell you
| Question | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| Does naturalistic communication teaching help minimally verbal children communicate more? | Randomised evidence says yes, with a moderate effect and some fading |
| Does ABA improve speech itself? | Contested. A credentialed researcher argues the evidence does not support it |
| Is ABA better than speech therapy for language? | No head-to-head trial exists. Anyone claiming an answer is guessing |
| Is doing both better than doing one? | Also untested. Widely asserted, never demonstrated |
That last row is worth pausing on, because "do both" is the most common advice on the internet and it rests on no trial at all.
Why the two professions rub against each other
Some of it is genuine scope overlap. A survey of professionals found 67% had no coursework at all in working across disciplines, which is a training gap rather than a personality problem.
Our position is simple. Language is the SLP’s expertise. We build functional communication, we follow the SLP’s lead on language targets, and we do not write speech goals.
If you want the fuller version of that disagreement, we wrote about it on why some SLPs criticise ABA.
What Budding Futures will and will not claim
We use VB-MAPP, which is built on verbal behaviour, to see which communication skills a child already has. We teach requesting, and we build ways for a child to be understood, including alongside a device an SLP has chosen.
We will not tell you ABA makes children talk. We will not promise a timeline. Our full service is described on the ABA therapy for speech delay page.
Rachel Blackburn, BCBA leads our clinical planning, and we work in homes across Colorado.
Frequently asked questions from parents
Q: Does ABA therapy help with speech delay?
A: It can help a child communicate more, and there is randomised evidence for naturalistic, play-based communication teaching. Whether it changes speech development itself is disputed by credible researchers.
Q: Is ABA a substitute for speech therapy?
A: No. Speech and language is the SLP’s field, not ours. Budding Futures coordinates with your child’s speech therapist rather than replacing them.
Q: Is combined ABA and speech therapy better than either alone?
A: Nobody knows. There is no head-to-head trial comparing them, so any provider claiming combined therapy is proven superior is going beyond the evidence.
Q: Who disagrees with ABA on language?
A: Laurent Mottron, an autism researcher, has argued in a peer-reviewed journal that the evidence quality is low or very low and that intervention at this age has no demonstrated influence on later speech development.
Q: So should we do it or not?
A: That is a decision for you, your pediatrician and your SLP. What we can say is what the evidence supports and where it runs out, which is what this page is for.
